Category: the Rant Board
And now for my rant of the day, my mom bought a calling card a couple of weeks ago, and it was a total rip off. It said talk for 7 days, then it says the card can be reactivated in a month, yet it expires in 90 days. Well, my mom only got to make 2 calls on it, and when I tried to get in to a conference on Friday, instead of tellingme to dial the number I want to call, it thanked me for registering the card, and told me to enter my registration number, which I didn't have. It got lost somehow, when I called customer service, I talked to some spanish guy who told me that since I didn't have the registration number, he couldn't help me, and he said it was a 7 day card, so the time on it had ended. I guess when it says 7 days, it means 7 days, and if you don't make at least one call every day of that 7 days, and it expires after you make one or 2 calls, too bad. I don't trust cards that don't give you minutes. The only other card she found were for wireless, and that was the only residential calling card she could find. Looks like the phone companies are trying to get calling cards extinct in order to force people to use them for long distance calls. Oh well, unless the minute type cards come back, looks like myconferencing days are over. I miss those cards that were upfront about the minutes you had. Someone gets a good thing going, then someone else has to louse it up.

well, looks like I'm even in both topics, no responses in my rave post, and none in this one either.

All I have to say...That's why you examine every aspect before you buy. *smile* And as far as the guy not being able to help you...Maybe that's their policy if the card is number/registration number is missplaced. After all, anyone can say they have a card and not really have it, and the companies have to do something to cover their own backsides. Being a business owner I understand this all to well. As far as getting other cards. Has your Mom checked out vending machines? Quite often you can find them in gas stations. At least around here we can.
WW, use One Suite (www.onesuite.com) long distance is 2.8 cents per minute, you sign up on the web site then dial either a local number (which gies you lower rates) or 1800 315 9339 then you enter your pin code which is the phone number you registerreed + a 4 digit code they give you. You can even set it up so that when you call from your home number to the 800 number it recognizes that it's your phone and does not ask you for any pin number at all. I've used them for over 5 years now and love them, they also have the best international rates around.
cheers

Thanks wildbrew, but my mom and I don't buy anything online, or pay for anything online, but thanks anyway. I prefer a straight card, where you go into a place, and the card gives you the amount of time you have in minutes, say, 250 minutes, and each time you called the number and made your call, you were told upfront how many minutes you had, and when it ran out, it would just cut you off. They were very simple cards.

WW, your loss then really, this card does exactly that, when you dial it tells you how many minutes you have left, then when you run out you log into your account and refill the card. The best phone deals etc are deals you get online so by not buying or doing anything online then you're inevtiably missing out on the bet deals.
I just use Time Warner Cable voice over IP it is $40 but it's unlimited long distance and Bell South charges more than that just for a local plan
well it might be my loss, really, but one other thing I lose out on by not buying anything online is getting my identity hacked. I don't do anything online that has to do with money, especially since you'd have to give your name, and use a credit card, too risky.

Well, true, then again I'veused the net for purchases and subscriptios etc for 8years and never had an identity theft. And you are even more likely tohave your identity stolen by forgetting to rip up a restaurant receit (they used to have your entire credit card numberon them now fortunately most place only show the last 4 digits but not all) or having your ientity stolen some other way, soeone copying the informaation wen you're not looking etc.
So, t's a judgement call, I pay all my bills online, it allows me to be independent and not rely on sighted assistance for my finances, I get super good deals on phone cards and lots of goods because I buy themonline, so I think your fear of it is a little bit unjustified yet, of course it's your hoice, I'm just saying there are very good phone choices ot there that you are missing out on but you knowif you have Bell South for extra $2 a month you get their 5 cents per miute plan, which is good, Sam's Club also has good phone cards.
calling cards suck. The cards that (can't remember which brand of soda.) Pepsi had in their 12 pack cases only lasted for 10 minutes, I only got 2 minutes in with my exboyfriend and that was it. I miss the dime a line plan lol where I can call for 30 minutes and it be only 10 cents which was awesome as I could call my ex once a week for a hour and it be nothin but 10 cents.
Hi Jessica,
Well the first 2 cards were very good, one was 350 minutes I think, and the last one 250 minutes, and of course, I'm talking about residential cards, they're the ones that seem to be dying out, but they have plenty of those wireless cards, which we're not interested in. All I can say to those individuals who think us paranoid who don't buy or subscribe to things online, all I can say is, I hope you continue to stay lucky.

My husband and I use to not buy anything online, and we still got majorly screwed. How? Don't have a clue...Anyways, I do buy on line, and have had no problems with it. For instants, one deal I got was the Vonage. $25 a month for one line and you can call anywhere within the US or Canada at no extra charge, and no, they're not lying, they don't charge my account without provication...
